Artist's Statement

So why and how am I an artist? As to the why, I am an artist because I have a talent and enjoy the job. Art is also my job because I want to use that talent to redirect people's focus to what is good and beautiful. Hopefully, my art reminds us that not everything is all bad. Finally, I am an artist to serve God.

Why landscape? Because I find the landscape both comforting and energizing; it's always interesting. Landscape reminds me of God and I always feel close to Him in "the great outdoors." I very much subscribe to the idea of oriental ink painters: that landscape expresses something beyond humankind. Personally, I also find the peace and space of landscape freeing and exciting.

As to how, I remember things in pictures. Often my landscapes capture the day of a picnic or a drive or a camping trip. It's always a pleasure to transcribe those mental pictures and experiences into line and color for other people to encounter too. I admire line: its diversity, variety of expression, sheer capability to show. Lines define, direct, shape, trace - Wow! What better, more interesting tool!
